I can’t tell you how many emails I get from Agency Nation University prospects that say this:
“I want to generate insurance Facebook leads.”
That’s it. That one sentence.
(on REALLY good days I get a “Thx” too.)
Look I’m not going to sit here and tell you that you shouldn’t want online leads.
I want online leads.
The problem I have with this……request…..
….is its short-sightedness.
This is what that sentence says to me: “I just want to throw some money at the internet and then have it give me exactly what I want.”
One question: when has that EVER worked in life?!?!!!
If I could just throw money at things and get exactly what I want…my relationship would be a HECK of a lot easier.
And yet – I see it over and over and over again – insurance agents asking me to show them how to “work Facebook” or “work LinkedIn” because they see it as a series of levers and buttons that, if pushed correctly in the right sequence, will have incredibly interested prospects raining from the digital heavens.
I’m going to tell you a big secret about digital marketing (and really, the internet in general).

Seriously – this is some r-e-v-o-l-u-t-i-o-n-a-r-y stuff right here.
Put your big kid pants on.
Grab your espresso.
Here it is.
Life pretty much works the same way online as it does offline.
Does standing outside a real estate agency with a big sign (read: ad) with your agency name and logo on it make them want to work with you?
Does shouting your agency name outside the construction business 5 miles from you every Tuesday and Thursday make them think: “man, I just realized I really want that guy to be my agent?”
I’m hoping we’re all on the same page here: these are rhetorical questions.
When you expect business without giving value, people can smell the car salesman on you.
We all know this and act by these human principles in the real world.
But then – we get online and forget our humanity.
